Cultivating Love - A Valentine’s Day Menu for YOU or TWO January 20 2017

Aromatic Adventures & the Treasures of Taste - Arabian Nights

We gals at Terre Botanicals know that you don’t need a significant other to be surrounded by love, especially when showing love for yourself. And what better way to do that than with an enticing meal that will take you on an exotic aromatic journey.

There are many foods that have been revered in worldly history and culture for their symbolism and meaning in addition to their aphrodisiacal qualities.  Our Valentine’s Day menu suggestions incorporate a few of these foods, like…

Terri, our founder, always says, “Roses are what love tastes like,” and we aren’t just talking about romantic love here. Historically, rose oil has been revered for its use as an aphrodisiac, but also for calming and anti-depressant effects.  It was also popularized by the Egyptians for use in religious ceremonies.

Ginger, with its warming spiciness, was used in folk medicine in ancient times to increase blood circulation and calm digestive upset, and also associated with passion, success, and wealth.

Appropriately called the “Queen of the Night,” Jasmine’s white flowers are most fragrant at night.  It often represents purity and elegance, explaining why it is known in some cultures as the most significant flower used in wedding ceremonies.

Vanilla is anything but plain and mundane.  Vanilla beans grow on an orchid-like vine that blooms only one day a year and must often be pollinated by hand. No wonder its enticing aroma has been sought after for centuries!

Whether it’s the aphrodisiacal qualities, symbolic significance or simply the aromatic and exotic flavors of this menu that appeal to you, remember, it’s a Valentine’s Day feast fit for two, or just YOU.  So, join us and discover the Treasures of Taste of the Arabian Nights…

Words of Appreciation from Our Friends & Collaborators September 21 2016

We are so grateful for the praise and recognition we have received, and we’d like to thank our supporters, colleagues, and business & retail customers who use our products and give us valuable feedback.

Our passion is to educate and support your efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle by empowering your food choices, and it’s our advocates who aid us in promoting a healthier relationship with sugar and its use as “Mother Nature’s Condiment” rather than a staple food.

Anna Zefferys, founder of the Treatmo app store believes, “Flavor creators like Terre Botanicals, based in Phoenix, Arizona, are improving accessibility to better ingredients with the aim of bringing real food and exceptional taste to kitchens everywhere... The beauty of her products is flavor packed into smaller amounts, meaning you can use less and achieve more.”

Our mission is to do just that… bring you pure plant ingredients that not only inspire, but enhance the vitality of the body, mind, and soul.

In an article for the Phoenix New Times, Jennifer Lind Schutsky writes, “The feeling of being satiated comes, in part, from the aromatic experience of smelling, which can be achieved with aromatics and oils...A dash of a flavored sugar on bitter vegetables, for example, can create a truly aromatic experience.”

Creating a beautiful flavor is like writing a poem, scoring a piece of music or painting a picture. It requires both skill and sensitivity to the beautiful world around us. We hope to pass these time-honored traditions on to you, and to inspire your edible experiences just as Mother Nature has inspired us.

Visit us at the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market for the opening of our season on October 22nd, shop our online store, or visit our new mobile app store on Treatmo.

Quatre Épices - Our New Aromatic Finishing Sugar April 26 2016

Our new Quatre Épices Aromatic Finishing Sugar was inspired by Joél Robuchon’s recipe for a spice blend known as Quatre Épices (meaning “four spices”) which marries allspice, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg.  This versatile and exotic blend is great in French or Middle Eastern dishes like soups, ragouts, and stewed dishes.

Imagine an aromatic spice rub for braised lamb shanks or using it in your holiday baking.  While the weather is warm, try it in place of the turbinado sugar in this refreshing recipe for Summer Squash Refrigerator Pickles from the New York Times that we just love!

Summer Squash Refrigerator Pickles

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons raw brown (turbinado) sugar

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 2 large garlic cloves, cut in half lengthwise

  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns

  • 2 teaspoons coriander seeds

  • 2 teaspoons mustard seeds

  • 2 dried red peppers

  • Several sprigs fresh dill (optional)

  • 1 pound mixed zucchini and yellow squash, sliced thin

  1. In a small saucepan combine cider vinegar, water, brown sugar, salt and garlic cloves. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 2 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, divide spices and optional dill sprigs between 2 pint jars or use 1 quart jar. Pack sliced zucchini into the jars, leaving 1/2 inch head space below the rim of the jar.
  3. Use hot, sterilized jars. If using pint jars, divide garlic that is in the vinegar mixture between the 2 jars. Pour in the hot vinegar mixture, leaving 1/2 inch below the rim of the jar. Push the squash down into the liquid to cover completely. Seal the jars and leave to cool, then refrigerate for up to 2 months. For best results, don’t open for 2 days.

Strawberries & Lavender: Springtime Soulmates March 18 2016

The warm beautiful weather we have had here in Phoenix is beginning to coax the strawberries from light green to their brilliant deep shade of red as spring approaches. The array of flowers is becoming ever more plentiful as well, especially one of our favorites, lavender. Strawberries and lavender are companion plants, meaning they grow very well near each other. It just so happens that lavender and fresh strawberries also make a wonderful flavor pairing whose sweet, bright and floral notes complement our beautiful spring weather very well.

Grab a few extra lemons off the tree, and make a fragrant strawberry lavender lemonade by tossing fresh strawberries with our Lavender Fleur Aromatic Finishing Sugar and muddling them with the lemon juice. Top it off with some cold water and ice, and you’ve got a quintessential spring beverage begging to be enjoyed outside in the soft sunlight.

For another recipe featuring this decadent duo, check out our Strawberry Lavender Cornmeal Shortcakes in the Recipe Library.  Enjoy!
